Delos International continues its legendary tradition of bringing significant recordings to the global classical marketplace with this stunning New Release: SHOSTAKOVICH, THE VIOLIN CONCERTOS, with violinist Dmitri Kogan and Maxim Shostakovich conducting the Tchaikovsky Symphony Orchestra.
This Delos release is unique in the classical realm because it offers two masterpieces by one of the greatest composers of the 20th Century, Dmitri Shostakovich, played and interpreted by artists who have a very special history with the composer.
It is well known that Maxim Shostakovich, the gifted son of the composer, is a distinguished conductor and an important exponent of his father's music. Violin soloist Dmitri Kogan's musical heritage is also significant to the global classical marketplace. His grandfather, Leonid Kogan, often played and worked with Dmitri Shostakovich himself, and his grandmother, Elizaveta Gilels, was the sister of famed Russian pianist, Emil Gilels. Such important family ties have guaranteed that Dmitri Kogan has developed into a masterful interpreter of the music of Shostakovich.
Shostakovich's two major works for the violin, written between 1948-67, are widely regarded as true masterpieces of 20th Century violin music. Both concertos reflect not only the passionate artistry of the composer (and the inspired performance on this incredible disc) but also the mastery and dedication of the soloist. Both Maxim Shostakovich, Dmitri Kogan and the equally legendary Tchaikovsky Symphony bring these much sought-after works to the classical listener.
